Low-threshold showers are getting more popular and it’s not hard to see why. They can be incredibly beautiful, they’re more accessible, and safer.
We’ll cover what exactly a low-threshold shower is, how it works, and what makes it an appealing option for homeowners.
What is a low-threshold shower?
A low-threshold shower is a walk-in shower that has no sill to step over. The floor of the shower is flush with the bathroom floor. That makes it safer to enter and it also makes it easy to roll a wheelchair into or enter with the assistance of a walker.
Even if you’re still capable of stepping over a sill, walk-in showers look luxurious. So, if you like the look of a walk-in shower conversion, you can upgrade your bathroom now and there’s no rush to convert later if you lose mobility at any point.
How do walk-in showers drain?
In most cases, low-threshold showers will have slightly sloped floors that cause the water to flow towards the drain. However, if for some reason that won’t work or you’re concerned with water still getting out there are other options.
One option is a linear trench drain. These are normally installed at the entrance of your shower to prevent water from getting outside.
Are low-threshold showers safer?
Obviously, a walk-in shower is more accessible, but is it truly safer?
Some people worry about falling in a shower. However, there are several ways to prevent this.
First, if you have a hard time standing for long periods of time, we can install a seat in your new shower. Second, there are tile choices available that are slip-resistant.
We’ll also make sure the lighting in your shower is both safe and comfortable.
Top Tier Kitchens & Baths also install “roll-in” showers that make it easier to use in tandem with a wheelchair. Below is a picture of the entrance of one of these showers we recently installed.
