It takes a creative mind to figure out how to remodel a small bathroom. When there’s a small space that still requires most of the same amenities as any other bathroom, there’s not a lot of room for decorative touches.
However, there’s ways to make a small bathroom beautiful and functional through intelligent design.
How to remodel a small bathroom to make it feel larger
Small bathrooms, especially if they’re drab, can be unpleasant to use. Luckily, there’s ways through design to make rooms seem larger than they are.
Use light shades of color and avoid using contrasting hues. Try not to put color on the ceiling and instead use white.
We also agree with a couple of suggestions from this blog on small spaces. When remodeling your small bathroom, keep (or add, if possible) natural lighting. The more, the better. If that’s not possible, install lighting that doesn’t take up a lot of space.
To lighten up things even more:
-
Match floor tile and wall colors
-
Use pops of color in smaller ways – like your towels, rug, pictures, or knickknacks
-
Shiny fixtures on your sink
How to remodel a small bathroom to free up space
Using color and light to make your small bathroom *seem* larger can go a long ways, but actually freeing up space is going to truly make it more functional.
One of our favorite ways to do this is by using open shelving throughout and removing as many other swinging doors as possible.
Open doors take up space. Open shelving take care of that without sacrificing storage.
You can also replace the entry door with a sliding barn door. Similarly, if you have a shower with a door you can replace it with a sliding option.
Other ways to free up space:
-
Swap hanging light fixtures with recessed lighting or other lighting that takes up little space
-
If you have a shower curtain, use a curved rod
-
Install a small or an otherwise space-saving sink (such as a corner sink)
How much does it cost to remodel a small bathroom?
